Waynesborough's Rick is as cool as an osberg

the pro championships of the Bermuda Goodwill Tournament yesterday at Mid Ocean when he shot a two-under-par 69 to beat out David O'Kelly of Willow Bend by one stroke.

Osberg collected a cheque of $2,500 of which $500 came from sponsors Bacardi who put up the Bacardi Rum trophy. Roy Pace of Wee Burn won the senior division and also received $500 from the sponsors in his cheque of $1,500, after his six-over 77 gave him victory by two strokes over five other players on 79.

They were Charlie Knowles of Railside, Mike Joyce of Huntington, Walter Lowell of Canton, Jerry Coates of Greenwich and local favourite Joe Carr of Bedrock.

"I really got off to a great start when I birdied one, two and three but then I made a couple of mistakes when I bogeyed four and six,'' explained Osberg who also won the pro title in 1984, '85 and '87.

"On four I three-putted and on six I had a poor chip, but then I birdied nine so on the front nine I was two under. On the back nine I three-putted 10 for a bogey and then birdied 14 and 16 before I bogeyed 18 when I almost hit the ball into the ocean.'' Added Osberg: "The back nine was hard, with 12 and 13 really hard. On 15 I was playing against the win on a par-five. I was trying not to make any mistakes. There are so many hard holes there. Four and five are key holes on the front nine.'' Amongst the players trying to catch Osberg was defending champion Stu Ingraham of Overbrook who finished tied for seventh with Rick Vershure of Quaker Ridge.

Osberg is hoping his individual success will spill over in the team competition when Waynesborough travel to Mid Ocean today and Castle Harbour tomorrow.

"We're not doing well,'' he said.

"We had a 72 gross, 68 net at Port Royal and on Tuesday had a 64 gross, 60 net at Belmont. I played good at Belmont when I had six birdies. This is my seventh Goodwill. It's a great tournament, the best amateur tournament anywhere.'' A total of 14 players failed to turn in cards amongst the 98 pros who were scheduled to compete in yesterday's tournament.
