Bean teamed with his pupil Laverne Jones to defeat two of his other students, Margaret Leonard and Steven Phillips, in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Naturally, the students had differing viewpoints about their teacher.

"It was hard to free up playing with him,'' said partner Jones. "He would find himself saying `you could have gotten that.' Or `move your feet.' '' Leonard, on the other hand, felt that Bean "was a bit more focused and more serious out there today. But even then he was the consummate teacher.'' It took Jones and Bean 50 minutes to get past Leonard and Phillips and they are now scheduled to meet Ailsa Campbell and Mark Melvin in third round action today.

Campbell warmed up to the task when she teamed with Jacqui White to defeat Joanne Tucker and Estelle Knight 6-1, 6-2 in women's doubles action.

In two other interesting matches, seniors top seed Oliver Bain continued his march towards the finals with a hard-fought match against Melvin before winning 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). The giant-killing feats of veteran Howard Cross came to an abrupt halt yesterday when John Sharpe came away with a three-set victory 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

"It was a weird sort of match in a way,'' said an exhausted Sharpe afterwards.

Meanwhile, tournament organisers said that semifinalists, quarter-finalists and finalists are expected to be available when their matches are scheduled with every attempt made to accomodate players.
