Moonlight Movies venue changed to Front St

A summer series of free outdoor movies may have to be curtailed if sponsors can't be found for some of the showings.

The Moonlight Movie events are due to take place every weekend until September 19 — but organiser Eugene Dean told The Royal Gazette yesterday that some films may be pulled for financial reasons.

"We are hoping that we get the support to be able to complete the series, otherwise some of the films are going to have to be cancelled. We really do need some more sponsors. We are always encouraging people at the events if they work for a company, let them know.

"One way to help is to volunteer so we can keep the costs down. We are looking at it really like a community event. Our view is that if people see the value in it and enjoy it, then let's all contribute to keep it going."

A sponsor has been secured for the series finale on September 19, which will include a family festival in the Botanical Gardens.

Meanwhile, the venue for today's movies — Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Proposal — has been switched from Barr's Bay Park to the Number One Car Park on Front Street.

Mr. Dean explained that the park had been damaged due to the number of events held there over the summer and the rain over Cup Match.

"There have been a lot of events down at the park back to back. The ground is very compressed and a lot of the grass is burnt. It was explained to us that the park really needs to be locked off and be allowed to catch itself or it is going to be beyond repair."

Ed Benevides, chief operating officer at the Corporation of Hamilton, which is responsible for the park, said: "Whenever a city park is used for a major event, in order to ensure it recovers fully, it is important to give the space an opportunity to recover.

"This recovery includes time and specific care to the grass and plants ensuring they remain healthy and beautiful for future events."

The Number One Car Park will be closed from 6 p.m. today and motorists should remove cars and bikes from the parking lot before that time.

The event starts at 7 p.m. with a live performance from Conscious; Diary of a Wimpy Kid (PG) starts at 8.30 p.m. and The Proposal (PG-13) starts at 10.20 p.m.

Those attending are asked to bring chairs, though a limited supply will be available to borrow.
