Young people who are about to begin college are invited to attend an information session tonight hosted by the youth wing of the United Bermuda Party.

The event is part of plans by Young United Bermuda (YUB) to expand its presence in the community and inspire an interest in politics and social issues in their age group.

The workshop takes place at Wesley Methodist Church in Hamilton from 5.45 to 7.30 p.m. to discuss everything parents and students need to know before going to university.

Topics to be discussed will be obtaining funding, handling money once at university, Immigration documentation and cultural adjustments. Student panellists will make presentations followed by a question-and-answer session.

YUB spokesperson Kim Caines said the session is designed to be a casual way to answer questions students and parents may have about university.

Ms Caines, who will be going into her third year of study at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, will give a presentation on studying in Canada. She will be joined by law student Jennifer Rhind who will give a presentation on studying in England and Melissa Durrant who will talk about studying in the United States.

Bermuda College student Lesley Smith will talk about local study options and programmes. Derek Smith of the Bermuda Careers Centre is also expected to deliver a presentation.

Representatives from Butterfield Bank will also give a presentation about finance and scholarships offered by the bank. Students will also give advice on setting up bank accounts in other countries.

?We hope this will be a relaxing and enjoyable way for students to ask questions, to prepare themselves for university and to provide them with the basic information to help them make the adjustment before they get to university,? said Ms Caines.

The event is also part of the party?s aim to increase events by the party?s youth wing. YUB has a membership base of 15 students and young professionals.
