@bodyrg12:Over the last few weeks, the Royal Gazette has been effectively producing not one newspaper, but two.

That is because many members of the newspaper's staff have been preparing for the implementation of a new computer system, which finally "went live" yesterday.

That is an awesome challenge for any business, but it has additional challenges for a newspaper which has to keep publishing every day at the same time that it is preparing for a change of computer system and the changes in working habits that that invariably brings.

For the Gazette, the changes most affected the newspaper's editors, who have to had to learn a new page design system at the same time that as many as 72 pages had to be laid out and designed every day.

The Royal Gazette was one of the first newspapers of its size to move from the world of typewriters and ticker type machines to a computerised editorial system in the early 1980s and was again one of the first newspapers of its size to begin laying out pages on computers in the early 1990s.

Now the newspaper will be moving to the next stage in the process, with a fully paginated product, which should mean a more efficient and better looking newspaper, with, we hope fewer errors, not least because our new system has an outstanding archive system, spell and fact checker and several other elements which should make for a better and more accurate newspaper.

For the newsroom , another major advantage is the ability to print colour pages right up to our midnight deadline, which should result in more timely illustrations for our stories. You can also expect to see more graphics and continued improvements in design.

Observant readers of The Royal Gazette will have noticed that it had a slightly different appearance yesterday with a new typeface and and what we hope is a sharper and tighter look. This typeface is also intended to be more readable.

Few readers will have missed the fact that we had no colour news photos in the newspaper; ironically, mechanical problems only indirectly related to the new computer system meant that we had to cancel our colour printing on the first day that the new system had "gone live".
