Gina shines in Trinidad track and field meet

medals and was voted Outstanding Athlete in Under-13 Girls competition at the Fourth Biennial Caribbean Union of Teachers' Track and Field Championships held last week in Trinidad.

Twelve-year-old Cann struck gold in the long jump with a leap of 4.86 metres and again in the 200 metres where she set a meet record of 26.48 seconds. She garnered two bronze medals in the high jump and 800 metres medley relay.

Also setting a new standard for the competition was Varnae Ingham, who clipped 10 seconds off the old 800 metres mark with a time of 2:23.59. Suella Matthews (800m), Mark Constable (1500m) and Waynesha Bean (100m) all recorded personal bests in their events.

The Bermuda team, consisting of 13 athletes, was one of eight competing countries at the championships. They took part in a total of 24 events, winding up fifth overall behind Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia and St. Vincent.

The full team was as follows: Lorin Baxter, Waynesha Bean, Gina Cann, Mark Constable, Jaritta Dill, Lashon Dill, Vernae Ingham, Suella Matthews, Tiffany Scraders, Khano Smith, Velvet Smith, Leonard Williams, Torrick Williams. Team officials: Cal Simons, Joann Davis, Mike Charles, Jeremy Ball.
