Garland grabs Atlantic title
squandered a one-stroke lead to lose the overall Atlantic International Junior Championships title to Bermuda's Chris Garland.
Garland had taken a three-stroke lead into yesterday's final round at Belmont but, when the Bermudian made some early errors, Hilts was able to close the gap to lead by one stroke after 14 holes.
However, later in the round, Garland kept his cool when the pressure was on, responding to Hilts' challenge with birdies on the 15th and 17th. He finished with a 76 for a three-stroke victory.
Hilts also shot 76, struggling over the last four holes and shooting a double bogey on the par four 15th.
Garland also won his division, 15-17, by eight strokes over American Jon Boland, who shot a final round of 75.
Hilts, meanwhile, had the consolation of winning the 18-21 group by four shots over a fast-finishing Duncan Zelkin, the defending champion. Zelkin fired the best round of the day, a one over par 71.
Another Bermudian, Quinton Sherlock, won by nine strokes over Robbie Spurling in the 13-14 group, finishing with an 80 while Spurling closed the gap with a fine 75.
Justin Barritt of Bermuda led from start to finish in the 11-12 group to defeat Keno Turnquest of the Bahamas.
As was expected from the first round, Leslie Walsh of Canada won the girls title after a final round of 84 gave her a four-round total of 333 -- 67 strokes ahead of second-placed Gina Bassett.
In the novice division, David Ferreira was victorious with a three-round points total of 35 to edge out Daniel Frith on 29 and Oliver Pitcher on 25 points in the Stableford scoring system.
DUNCAN ZELKIN -- Shot the best round of the day at Belmont yesterday. But, after a poor start to the tournament, it was too late to bring him victory.
