offences yesterday and was ordered to pay $1,000 dollars in fines and $200 in compensation.

Magistrate Edward King turned down Horton's request for a month to meet the payments and ordered her to make the payments by the end of the month or serve 120 days in prison.

The judgment stems from an incident last July when Horton's dog, a Labrador Rottweiler mix, attacked a neighbour's English Setter and bit its ear and chest causing it to be hospitalised with a vet.

The dog attack took place at 7.15 a.m. on Callan Glen Rise Road as the neighbour, Felicity Cole, was jogging with her dog on a leash.

Horton was charged with being the owner of a dog that did damage to another dog and allowing her dog to stray and was fined $500 on each count.

A bill from Ettrick Animal Hospital for treatment to injuries sustained in the attack amounted to $53.46 but Mr. King ordered Horton to pay $200 to Ms Cole as compensation.

Horton, whose property is not fenced and who suggested her neighbour was unreasonable in holding that she should erect "expensive'' invisible fencing, changed her tune somewhat yesterday.

Her lawyer Kevin Bean said: "She will do everything to ensure her dog is properly secured in accordance with the legislation.'' Ms Cole said she was pleased with the outcome of the case.

"My principal reason for going this route was to make sure that the dog is restrained in the future,'' she said. "As it seems that will now happen, I am pleased.'' Asked if she was satisfied with the $200 compensation finding in her favour Ms Cole said: "But of course, yes.''
