Shadow Attorney General Trevor Moniz has hit out at Government?s slowness in releasing the justice report.

Some of Bermuda?s top legal minds worked on ways to improve the efficiency of the justice system.

Attorney General Larry Mussenden was given the report in late April and promised it would be unveiled in June with the recommended changes.

However Mr. Moniz is angry this deadline has been missed and no firm date has been put in its place.

The report went to Cabinet and the Governor?s office at least five weeks ago.

Mr. Moniz said: ?I am terribly disappointed the Attorney General has not lived up to his promise to have it tabled in the House of Assembly by June.

?It is my understanding Government House is in possession of this report for some time.?

Deputy Governor Nick Carter confirmed the report was waiting for him when he returned from holiday on June 3 but he said it was up to Government to decide when to release it.

The Justice System Review Committee met under the direction of Chairman Justice Norma Wade Miller with the aim of improving the overall efficiency of the criminal and civil courts.

One of the aims of the report is to encourage more lawyers to get involved in criminal defence work to reduce the backlog of work.

The report also looks at improving the efficiency of the civil justice system, including the arrangements for establishing a commercial division of the Supreme Court and updating the Rules of the Supreme Court.

Some of the recommendations in the report were to:

?Establish a list of priorities for the justice system;

?Consider means for the elimination of the backlog of cases awaiting criminal trial;

?Consider the improvements needed to ensure the efficient administrative functioning of the courts including a method for court reporting and a computerised system for records;

?Consider ways to improve judicial training;

?Consider criminal law reforms to improve the efficiency of the criminal justice system.
