Bail Act approved

Legislation which codifies for the first time all of Bermuda?s bail regulations generated little confrontation among Senators yesterday, the vast majority of who concluded the bill made absolute sense.

While the Bail Act does not contain any radical innovations, legal practitioners on the Island have never been able to refer to one single document when arguing over bail in the courts ? a flaw brought up in the recently concluded Justice System Review.

Government Senate Leader and Attorney General Larry Mussenden argued that the Bail Act was a fundamental part of the Government?s ongoing efforts to modernise the justice system.

But echoing his colleagues in the House of Assembly two weeks ago, Opposition Senator Kenneth Bascome said that while he welcomed the law, it did not achieve anything new and implied that its importance should not be over-exaggerated.
