American lawyer charged with possessing guns
A 61-year-old lawyer from Arkansas appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday charged with possessing two guns and ammunition.
The court heard from Senior Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney that on Friday, Gary Barket was travelling from Bermuda to Newark.
When he went through security screening at L.F. Wade International Airport, a .32 Revolver, 6.35mm semi-automatic and four rounds of ammunition were allegedly discovered in his garment bag.
Barket was not required to enter a plea, as the matter must be heard by the Supreme Court.
His lawyer, Saul Froomkin QC, told the court that Barket is married and practises law in Arkansas and Missouri.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered Barket to surrender all travel documents and to report to Hamilton Police Station daily.
The magistrate also granted the defendant $100,000 bail plus one surety.
The matter adjourned until Friday for an administrative hearing at Magistrates' Court.
