Vandals strike in the heart of Hamilton

Vandals used white paint to paint over trash cans, street signs, and cross walk signals at the junction of Parliament Street and Victoria.

A community activist is calling on the Public to help Police find those responsible for vandalising Hamilton street signs, stoplight poles and receptacles with graffiti.

Charles Spanswick, a longtime advocate for the city, said he was baffled as to why someone would engage in such a senseless act, which is thought to have happened overnight last Wednesday.

It's understood that the culprit used a form of Latex spraypaint that's difficult to remove once dry. Corporation of Hamilton staff quickly removed it, however. The doors of the Magistrates' Court were also painted over as well as signs at the junction of Parliament and Victoria Street.

Mr. Spanswick said: "I'm urging anybody that has seen anyone do something like this to come forward and report it to the authorities.

"Because if you don't report it, then these things will never get corrected — this is a problem we have in Bermuda."

He criticised the management team of the Corporation of Hamilton while praising the Corporation employees.

"I praise the Corporation of Hamilton staff, I'm not knocking them, just the Corporation management team — there is no management team — that's why myself and other business people want to turn the Corporation into a business management company," Mr. Spanswick said.

Mr. Spanswick also said that a heightened Police presence would help combat vandalism.
