Shadow Attorney General Trevor Moniz is urging fellow MPs to update the controversial Register of Members? Interests.

was told by Clerk to the Legislature Shernette Wolffe on Monday that the register could not be viewed because it had not been updated and wasn?t ?in any sort of order?.

Mr. Moniz said he is going to call a meeting of the select committee on Members? Interests ?in the next week? to urge MPs to update the register, designed to make elected members more accountable and to give Government more transparency.

Mr. Moniz, who caused disquiet among members on both sides of the House in his dogged six-year pursuit of a register, once again spoke of his desire to see the register expanded.

?Getting the register in the first place was only the beginning,? said Mr. Moniz.

He said reportershould have been shown the register, in whatever form it was held.

?I would like to see it available on the Internet, as it is in the UK, and I would like to see the new Ombudsman have responsibility for the Register,? he added.

?At the moment it is self-governing, which is not the ideal situation given the role it should play.

?And it is clearly not satisfactory that you () were not able to see the register ? it should be readily available for any member of the public to see, with an appointment.

?Perhaps, because you didn?t make an appointment, the clerk was caught on the hop, but the register should be ready to be viewed, whether it has been updated or not.

?But I would like to see entries from all the new members and updates from any old members.?

He said that the appropriate form, which contains nine questions about directorships, shareholdings, overseas trips and the receiving of gifts, has been sent out to all the new UBP members, although he admitted he wasn?t sure whether they had all completed and returned it yet.

?They have certainly all been told on an informal basis to get the forms in, and I have been asked questions by one or two of them on how to fill the form in,? he added.

Mr. Moniz said that he had not updated his own interests since the last election, although added he wasn?t sure if he needed to.
