Young sailors return home

The parents of world-travelled teenagers ? who have been learning and sailing on board the since last August ? are looking forward to welcoming them home

The ship will be in Bermuda for one week beginning on Monday before sailing back to Canada on the last leg of its journey.

The students ? Steven Bath, Florence Pedro, Jennifer Pereira, Katie Titterton, Joshua Emmerson, Kyla Smith and Melvin Martin ? left Vancouver last summer and have since travelled to Tanzania, South Africa, Madagascar, Namibia, Brazil, French Guyana, Trinidad, Guadeloupe, Dominican Republic and the Bahamas.

The seven teenagers, known as ?floaties?, are part of a group of almost 60 students, several teachers and ten permanent crew who have been learning and sailing with this unique learning programme for high school and first-year university students.

Numerous local students have participated in the programme since its inception 20 years ago.

While in Bermuda, the crew and students will have a range of port activities scheduled and will be introduced to Bermuda?s history, marine life and lifestyle.

The ship will be open to the public during its stay and will be berthed at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club in Paget from May 16 to 20.
