Teams still trying to find their form
THIS weekend's four matches in the Cingular Premier Division will be hard-pressed to match the 16 goals that came from just three encounters last weekend.
Even so, fans turning out to the matches will be expecting much of the same in the way of goals as teams battle for early-season points. It is unlikely, though that one match will produce 10 goals, as was the case in the Paget-Boulevard encounter at White Hill last weekend when the Blazers hammered their hosts 9-1.
This weekend there doesn't appear ? on paper at least ? to be any mis-matches as the four contests have close pairings. No team have hit form yet, with Boulevard following up their big victory over Paget with a 4-2 loss to Devonshire Cougars in the Martonmere Cup on Wednesday night. Cougars also lost to Somerset 4-2 in Martonmere action a week earlier and now must await the outcome of the Somerset-Boulevard match to see if the three points they have is enough for them to advance to the semi-finals.
This weekend sees the teams return to league action with the Trojans hosting Dandy Town at Somerset on Saturday night as both teams go in search of their first league wins. Victory for the Trojans would put them on four points and take them into top spot ahead of Sunday's other three matches which will see Boulevard travelling to Southampton Oval to meet PHC Zebras in another match that could go either way.
The Zebras took away all three points from St. John's Field last Sunday and will be confident of another victory against a Boulevard team that will also be looking to make it six points out of six. North Village and their neighbours, Devonshire Cougars, will battle for the three points at Bernard Park as both try to shake off early season inconsistency. Cougars are fresh off victory in the Martonmere Cup ? top striker Raymond Beach doubling his tally for the season with another two goals ? while Village are facing elimination in the Martonmere Cup after a loss and draw in their two group matches. They will only advance to the semi-final if PHC beat Dandy Town next Tuesday.
In the other Premier Division encounter on Sunday, St. David's will be hoping their promotion partners, Paget, are still feeling the effects of last weekend's hammering at the hands of Boulevard when they make the long trip to White Hill Field. This will be the best chance for St. David's to pick up their first win of the season, though, like Paget, they will have to improve on last weekend when they crashed to defeat at the hands of North Village.
The First Division promotion race is already wide open with Devonshire Colts, Ireland Rangers, Wolves and St. George's all failing to build on comfortable opening wins. Colts and Ireland Rangers drew 2-2 last weekend while Wolves could only manage a scoreless draw with Southampton Rangers are beating Prospect in their season-opener. St. George's, comfortable 7-1 winners over Hamilton Parish, missed the chance to go top when they lost to Prospect on Tuesday night.
The main promotion contenders should all return to winning ways on Sunday as Devonshire Colts host Social Club at Police Field, Wolves entertain Somerset Eagles at the Den, St. George's make the short trip to Garrison Field to meet X-Roads, Prospect are away to Hamilton Parish at St. David's and Ireland Rangers take on Southampton Rangers at Malabar in what should be the closest match.
