City public toilets to be upgraded

A public toilet in Hamilton is to be renovated to make it vandal-proof and easier to clean.

Charles Waters, the assistant engineer at the City of Hamilton, said the design would move to individual stalls with their own sinks and hand dryers to improve security.

Mr Waters added: “The Victoria Street bathrooms have historically been a target for vandalism due to the fact they are in an area with high foot traffic.

“So, with these new ones, we wanted a design that was more robust, not so easy to damage, which is why we have gone with stainless steel fixtures.”

Gorham’s Management Design was awarded the contract to carry out the work.

Mr Waters added the bathroom would be a test case for bathroom renovations.

He said: “If the public like the new concept, we will roll it out in other locations.”

Work is expected to start by the middle of the month and will take several months to complete.

The bathrooms will be closed to the public while work goes on.
