Hood see off Wanderers' challenge to stay top

Division A leaders and defending league champions Robin Hood withstood a spirited challenge from BAA Wanderers at BAA Field on Saturday to keep their unbeaten win streak intact and remain perched at the summit.

Hood, who after 270 minutes of soccer have still yet to concede a goal, narrowly edged by the home team 1-0 thanks to an Olivier Caruso first half strike.

Despite going down 3-0 to MR Onions, who picked up their second win of the season at Shelly Bay Field, North Village Rams still held onto second place as third place Tuff Dogs also went down 1-0 to Key West Rangers during a close encounter at BAA Field.

An Ian Cracken 12th minute strike gave Onions a 1-0 half-time lead before further second half conversions by Andrew Bray (47 mins) and Richard Helme (78 mins) extended this match well beyond the visitor's reach.

Rangers moved up one place to fifth position courtesy of a Vernal Cann goal, however, the win was bitter-sweet for the visitor's who were reduced to ten men after Burton Cox received his marching orders for abusive language seven minutes from time.

Tuff Dogs' Peter Rickards was also booked for a deliberate handball late in the match.

Elsewhere, Vasco Mariners blasted Prison Officers 7-0 at Malabar Field.

Newly promoted Officers are certainly finding their new surroundings in the A Division to be a bit rough these days as they have now conceded a staggering 30 goals and have yet to open their scoring account after three matches.

Mariners' Michael Bean and Jose Barroso each grabbed a pair of goals, while Mark DeMoura, William Henderson and second half substitute Paul Mello capped off the rout with a single tallies.

At Wellington Oval, St.George's All-Stars picked up their first win of the season after handing visitors Lobster Pot a 1-0 loss. A first half goal by Terrance Carlington got the job done for the home team, while the visitor's woes were further compounded with the late sending off of Stephen Rosney.

All-Stars' Morris O'Brien also received a booking for displaying unsportsmanlike conduct.

In B Division action, Devonshire All-Stars replaced Somerset Extros at the top of the standings after handing the west enders a 6-3 defeat at Somerset Cricket Club.

Second-half super-sub Clevie (Palmer) Wade came off the bench to blast home two goals for All-Stars, while fellow substitute Ken Dill also netted. Germano Botelho, meanwhile, kept his a goal-a-game streak alive by grabbing his third strike of the season while former Bermuda senior national captain Lorenzo Symonds and Michael Looby also got in on the act.

Franklyn Simmons, Michael Corday and Troy (Starsky) Thompson replied for Extros who also suffered their first loss of the early season. Extros' Gary (Tuba) Mallory was also booked for unsportsmanlike conduct on the pitch.

At Shelly Bay Field, visitors PHC Raiders pasted Valley 5-1 to move into sole possession of second place. Chris Furbert, Michael Trott and Keith Bell all chipped in with a goal apiece, while Sammy (Snake) Swan came off the bench to convert two late goals for the visiting team. Kevin Isaac notched a consolation goal for Valley.

At Malabar field, Dockyard Falcons swooped into third place after thumping ten-man bottom dwellers Devonshire Lions 8-4.

Anthony (Small Berker) Burchall and Junior DeSilva both enjoyed fine outings by helping themselves to hat-tricks, while Lee Correia and Terrance Corday also found the net. No further information could be obtained on this match.

At White Hill field, Pest Control killed off Somerset Eagles 2-1 to pick up their second win of the season and move up a place to fifth in the standings.

Troy Crockwell scored both of Pest Control's goals while Timothy Telford replied for Eagles.

The match between Wolves Pack and Prospect/Fire was postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date, while PHC Raiders were awarded three goals and maximum points for their postponed October 12 clash with Wolves Pack.

All match officials have been asked by the Bermuda Football Association to have their match reports submitted no later then Tuesday.
