Women bid for third straight title

straight year when they compete in the 14th International Invitational Ladies Golf tournament in Chateau Montebello in Montreal, Canada, between August 25 and 29.

In 1990 in Naples, Florida, the Bermuda team won the gross division for the Balandra Cup and were runners up in the net for the Bermuda Bowl. Captain Judithanne Outerbridge won the Kitty Michael Founders Trophy as the best overall gross player in that tournament.

Last year, under captain Outerbridge, the Bermuda women won the low gross title with a score of 743 at Pinehurst, North Carolina, as Katyna Rabain was the overall low gross winner with a three round score of 207. Outerbridge was runner up for the gross title.

Southeast Florida won the low net team prize with a score of 638, followed by Puerto Rico in second jut a stroke behind. Second to Bermuda in the gross division were Jamaica on 765.

Back in 1981, when the tournament was held in Bermuda, the local women won both the gross and net prizes. The rules have since been changed to prevent one team from winning both divisions.

Outerbridge will again captain the Bermuda team which has just two changes from last year's squad with Sue Holland and Jeanne Perkins coming in to replace Sue Pearman and Mary Arton.

Cornell Bean moved one step closer to winning his fourth consecutive match play title yesterday at Castle Harbour when he defeated Kenny Leseur six-and-four to advance to the semifinals of the Bermuda PGA Lobster Pot Match Play Championship.

Bean's opponent for today's semifinal is Kim Swan who was last year's beaten finalist. Swan beat Eardley Jones six-and-four while the other results yesterday saw Keith Smith beat host pro Kevin Benevides four-and-two and Dwayne Pearman stop Lloyd James four-and-three.

Smith will meet Pearman, who carded seven birdies in winning his match, in today's other semifinal. Smith went three-under-par in beating Benevides.

Bean and Swan will start their match at 8.00 today with Smith and Pearman heading out eight minutes later.
