denied being the culprit who snatched them.

Stephen Wilfred Pitt, of Alexandria Road, Devonshire, is accused of two counts of receiving stolen property, including a chain saw, 73 cans of soda and more than a dozen bottles of wine belonging to the Portuguese Cultural Association sometime between April 18 and 20, 1997.

Pitt is also accused of two counts of breaking into the Portuguese Cultural Association sometime between April 13 and 20, 1997. Yesterday, a seven-man, five woman Supreme Court jury heard how Police found Pitt laying on top of a cloth in a Court Street parking lot. Under the cloth was several cases of soda, wine and a saw.

A Police photographer was summoned to the scene, known as the `Playground', to take photos of a sleeping Pitt laying on the goods. As Pitt woke up, Police asked him who the items belonged to and he replied: "I'm just looking after them.'' Pitt claimed that the items belonged to a man named Alex, also known as Sonny Bell. Mr. Bell testified that he had nothing to do with the goods and that Pitt had asked him to take the "fall''.

The case continues today before Puisne Judge Vincent Meerabux with Charlene Scott appearing for the Crown. Pitt is unrepresented.
