Controversial plans to build 196 homes at Southside ? with half of them slated to be sold to low-income buyers ? have been submitted to planners. Bermuda Homes for People submitted the plans, which include a community centre and retail and service outlets, on July 9.

About 100 of the homes at Marginal Wharf off St. David?s Road will be sold to lower income Bermudians starting at $199,000, while the rest of the homes will be sold at market prices, starting at $599,000.

Acting director of Bermuda Homes For People Clifford Schorer said yesterday that a meeting held earlier this month to present the plans, was the beginning of dialogue with the community.

He added that with the submission of the application to the Planning Department, people would now have the opportunity to object and that those objections will be taken into consideration.

St. David?s residents said at the community meeting the infrastructure of St. David?s will be overwhelmed by the proposed village. Concerns over increased traffic, policing, schools, and congestion on the Causeway were all raised. In addition, many residents and MP Suzann Roberts-Holshouser want a complete plan for St. David?s.
