The newly reconstructed Flatts Wharf opened yesterday, one week after rain washed out its scheduled opening.

Premier Jennifer Smith cut the ribbon along with Minister of Works and Engineering, Alex Scott.

With views of Flatts Inlet directly behind her, the Premier told those in attendance she was captivated by the "beautiful spot" and that it definitely added charm to Flatts Village.

Mr. Scott said that before the completion of the project, those who passed the area would not have known it was a public dock because of the old wall that blocked the view.

After speaking with the Flatts Development Committee, the project was approved and began last October, finishing in March, on budget and on time.

Changes made to the wharf included the construction of a sidewalk, lamp posts, a grounded seat wall, and two steps separating the sidewalk and the dock.

Mr. Scott said, "It was a very old dock, it wasn't secure and it was deteriorating, so we reconstructed the steps and the dock."

He said everyone will benefit from the project, "Flatts is between two towns, St. George's which is to the east and Hamilton, which is to the west, and it is a stop point, and hopefully it (the wharf) will help business in the area."
