Cup Match veterans return

interest in playing Cup Match again and have been included in St. George's' first trial match at Wellington Oval tomorrow, starting at 11.00 a.m.

The match will see a select XI led by skipper Clay Smith take on a side led by vice-captain Dean Minors.

Manders and Gibbons' inclusion in the trial follows skipper Smith's recent declaration that he intended to approach both players in a bid to enable the East Enders -- beaten last year -- to field their strongest possible team when the classic takes place on July 31 and August 1 at Wellington Oval.

"I'm happy that both of them have agreed to make themselves available and eligible for selection. They both have vast experience and ability that can help us a lot,'' said Smith yesterday.

Manders acknowledged that his Cup Match career was over after being dropped in 1995 while Gibbons played his last Cup Match in 1993. In both instances, the players criticised the club over the manner in which they were discarded.

However, the current lack of young talented players has forced Smith to approach the duo as well as another veteran, opener Dexter Smith, who was dropped last year.

St. George's didn't play any trial matches last year, but plan to have at least three, and possibly four, this time around.

"It we can get a game organised against Bailey's Bay, that will mean four trial matches, including the final that is customarily held the weekend before Cup Match,'' added Smith.

"We have a game scheduled against Western Stars next week. Whatever the case, the situation looks much better than last year.'' A number of youngsters have also been included in tomorrow's teams because of the unavailability of senior players involved in the domestic programme.

Teams: Clay Smith select -- Clay Smith (capt), Dennis Archer, Jason Lewis, Glenn Blakeney, Noel Gibbons, Cleon Scotland, Herbie Bascome, Dale Fox, Troy Dean, Keith Wainwright, Sinclair Gibbons, Jason Anderson, Janiko Marshall, Michael Jackman.

Dean Minors select -- Dean Minors (capt), Dexter Smith, Arnold Manders, Charlie Marshall, Dennis Trott, Mark Ray, Leon Place, Desmond Crockwell, Gary Brangman, Gregg Foggo, Troy Bean, David Adams, Stephen Outerbridge, Quinn Outerbridge.

Players are to report to the field by 10.15 a.m. and are reminded that their club dues must be paid by June 30 in order for them to be eligible for Cup Match.

Cleveland County won their second tour match in Ontario, Canada, beating Ajax by 19 runs on Wednesday. Scores: Cleveland 163, Ajax 144.

Jason Simons led Cleveland in batting with 48 while Courtney Trott followed with 38 and Wayne Smith 26.

Cleveland's Peter Philpott took two for 16 off 6.2 overs while 15-year-old David Gibbons took two for 24 off five overs.
