Renegades surprise Teachers

Bermuda Rugby Football Union executive committee will be forced to decide whether any points are to be deducted from the Mariners second team and Police first team for failing to fulfill their respective fixtures.

On Sunday, a rejuvenated Renegades side, led superbly by the in-form Phil Heaney, gained a surprising victory over Teachers. Discipline problems by the Reds allowed Heaney to cash in on five out of six penalty goal attempts for a 15-0 win.

Teachers, missing Ashley Redmond and Patrick Cooper up front and the quality of recently-retired Scott Correia behind, never recovered from two dropped chances close to their opponents line. Stevie Given was outstanding for the Gades providing a result that livens up the league title chase.

Mariners were left opponent-less when the weekend of Police sport was wiped out by the serious occurrences of Saturday night when a gunman shot two teenagers after going berserk in a crowded Court Street nightclub.

On Saturday, Teachers waited in vain for the arrival of a Mariners team that eventually arrived just before the 3.30 p.m. kick-off of the Renegades-Police match. A club spokesman claimed that there had been a misunderstanding over the kick-off time.

The high-scoring Police team then completed a 33-10 victory over the Gades with tries from Vaughn Davies (two), Stuart Randells, Tim Winkelman, Paul Hitchings and oldtimer Keith Senior. Steve Parkinson added a penalty.

A Sean Kelly try and a five points from the boot of Norman Cotterill eased the pain of defeat for Renegades.
