Stephen Woodley took Bermuda's medal haul in the CARIFTA Games to five when he placed third in the boys' under-20 triple jump final last night.

Woodley jumped a personal best 14.97 metres (49 feet, one-and-a-half inches) to collect his second medal of the three-day event in Barbados. He won a high jump gold medal on Saturday.

Team-mate Donte Hunt came up shy with his triple jump effort of 14.82 (49 feet), also a personal best, but only good enough for fifth.

Those efforts were the highlight of the final day's competition, which also saw Tammy Ray, Michael Donawa and Velvet Smith in action.

Official results from the open category races of Donawa (5,000 metres) and Smith (3,000 metres) were unavailable, though neither athlete medalled. Ray was confirmed as seventh in the girls' under-20 shot put final with a personal best throw of 10.91 metres.

For Aaron Bean, Sunday's bronze medal in the boys' under-20 long jump came at a price.

The youngster suffered pulled ligaments in his knee that will require medical attention when he returns home tonight.

Bean, who was in second place when he injured the knee in his second jump, was lucky to hold on to win the bronze with a leap of 7.02 metres. The injury was serious enough to force him to scratch from both the javelin event yesterday and also the 4 x 100 metres relay team.

Bermuda's other medals came from Michael Donawa, who set a season's best pf 4:06.14 in winning the 1,500 metres, and Vernae Ingham, who was third in the girls' under-17 800 metres in a personal best time of 2:16.2.

Injury and illness hampered the team's bid to match last year's six-medal haul. Atiba Tucker suffered a thigh strain in the under-20 200 metres heats and pulled out of the semifinals.

Sharif Taylor recorded a personal best in the under-20 800 metres semifinals when he placed third in the heats in 1:56.1 to qualify for the final.

Unfortunately, he collapsed from dehydration in the final and needed intravenous and oxygen treatment.

There were a number of other personal bests turned in by the Bermuda athletes.

Gina Cann equalled her personal best in the under-17 heats of the 100 metres with a time of 12.04.

Taylor recorded a PB in the 400 metres semifinals with a time of 49.8 while Damien Simmons in the under-17 400 metres final ran a personal best time of 52.

4.

Simmons then improved on that time in the semifinal when he ran 49.6 but failed to win a medal after placing seventh. The winning time was 46.9 by Michael McDonald of Jamaica.
