A repeat thief and burglar was sent to prison for a year after admitting stealing four bottles of alcohol from a sports club.

Maxwell Smith, 30, of no fixed abode, stole four bottles of liquor worth $112 from the Western Stars Sports Club on St. John's Road, Pembroke earlier this month after breaking in through a window. None of the items have been recovered.

Prosecutor Shade Subair told Magistrates' Court that after being charged with the theft, Smith told Police to "kiss my a**".

She also said Smith had a long history of committing similar offences and had been jailed in the past.

Smith said he had nothing to say to the court.

Looking at his record, Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves said: "Wow, you started this thing before you had a birth certificate, man.

"For a record like that, if you say you have nothing to say, I have to lock you up. A long, tall man like you; you are not even ugly.

"All these beautiful women around the Island, and you are spending your time in prison with all of these men. What's the matter with you?"

Smith was jailed for 12 months for the breaking and entering, and then fined for outstanding traffic offences.

He was also fined $250 for having an unlicensed vehicle, $100 for having no driver's licence and $1,000 for having no third party insurance all in September last year.
