The Mirrors programme is driving to recruit seven more volunteers for Bermuda’s at-risk youth, with just a few more days to go to meet its target.Commuters at Barnes Corner were greeted yesterday morning by a sign-carrying Mirrors team as part of a long-term campaign aimed at mustering hundreds of Bermudians.“Overall, we need about 230 volunteers,” said enrolment manager Kerry Judd. “Right now we probably still need about 80 by November.”This week’s target a total of 25 recruits by Friday is short only seven people. Ms Judd has called for volunteers through Facebook, churches and radio interviews.“Each group of volunteers has a very distinct timeline,” Ms Judd said. “This group will support young people as they go through orientation, which is a two-month commitment.”Orientation for Mirrors starts in about ten days, and runs until mid-November, she said.Ms Judd hopes also to show the public the value of their investment.“We track participants through education, their careers, any offending or reoffending, and the statistics are extremely positive,” she said.“We want to come back to the community, to our volunteers and the government that funds the programme, and show that the programme is worth the time.”This week’s volunteer appeal has already prompted a half-dozen requests for more information, she said.Once this orientation target is met, Mirrors will move on to recruiting education coaches for middle school students.“We plan to go on community walkabouts for our next round of volunteers,” Ms Judd said.To learn more, call 294-9291, or e-mail mirrors[AT]gov.bm.
