Gales cause widespread chaos
winds knocked down power and telephone lines.
Most of the Island's FM radio stations gave off nothing but static during the afternoon and evening. And local television viewers had to do without regular programming for much of the afternoon.
Meanwhile, unhappy mariners were doing battle with the winds to save Suzie , a 40-foot two-masted yacht that broke away from her moorings near Ducks Puddle on North Shore and drifted as far as the Swing Bridge on Coney Island Road.
The Florida-registered boat was still stuck last night as her keel became embedded in rock. Efforts to dislodge the boat using another vessel, Sealord , were unsuccessful.
A Harbour Radio spokesman said a renewed attempt to rescue the vessel would take place this afternoon at high tide. He added the boat's owner, Mr. James Parsons, remained on board. Another boat was reported adrift in Riddells Bay after it dragged its moorings.
