Police improve after first half misery

conditions into consideration, Bermuda Rugby Football Union president Peter Borland still described the first 40 minutes of the Renegades-Police match as the worst he had ever seen.

Constant stoppages for poor handling and offside offences left an expectant crowd disappointed by the lack of entertainment on offer. Only thanks to some sympathetic refereeing from Dennis Dwyer did the second half bring an improvement.

The boys in blue then took full advantage of an under-strength Renegades team to score 40 points in the second 40 minutes.

Skipper Sean Field-Lament started the rout, assisted by scores from Troy Glasgow, Mark Adams, Gareth Davies and Adrian Smith who revelled in his new role at hooker. Tim Carr had a fine game in contributing 15 points from a try and five out of six conversions.

Meanwhile, Teachers and Mariners effectively cancelled each other out in a hard hitting encounter shortly afterwards and on reflection, an 11-11 draw appeared a fair result.

Mariners led early through a Simon Turner try and two Gavin Corcoran penalties, but in typical fashion Teachers rallied through veteran Andrew Correia, who scampered over for a try, and two Andre Simons penalty goals, one of which came close to the final whistle.

Saturday's Amstel League Division Two programme got off to an inauspicious start as beleaguered Renegades could not raise a side and gift-wrapped two points to Mariners. But with a few new faces and injury plagued players returning, this might prove just to be a small hiccup for the once proud 'Gades club.

The Mariners boys sat back and watched a thoroughly entertaining encounter between Teachers and Police which resulted in a 17-12 win for the reds. Dave Hodgson, Shane Pratt and a penalty try and a Kevin Harris conversion accounted for the Teachers scoreline.

`Stormin' Norman Wilson, Sean Field-Lament and a superb Andy Wright conversion replied for Police.
