Coach Simons honoured by BOA
contributions to sport and education.
Fittingly the West End schoolteacher was recognised at National Stadium last Saturday as athletes, officials and former Olympians celebrated Bermuda Olympic Day.
Simons received a marble plaque from the Bermuda Olympic Association on behalf of the IOC for the work he has done both as a coach and educator. He is also one of the Island's top soccer referees.
Saturday's presentation was one of the highlights on a day when many were recognised for their achievements in athletics either as competitors or administrators.
"It was quite a surpise. I was honoured and will obviously treasure the award,'' said Simons this week.
Main features of Olympic Day were a fun walk that saw more than 60 people take part and a torch lighting ceremony performed by outstanding junior athlete Danielle Watson.
A moment of silence was also observed out of respect for Olympian Perry Johnson who represented the Island in the 1948 Olympics.
Past Olympians Debbie Jones Hunter addressed those in attendance and encouraged the present athletes to remain focused on their sports, assuring them that perseverance would pay off.
She noted how past Olympians such as Cal Dill, Dennis Trott and Mike Sharpe had benefited from the local track and field programme by receiving overseas scholarships.
She also committed herself to joining the Pacers and helping their development programme.
The presentation to Simons was made by John Hoskins, secretary general of the BOA.
