Bermuda suffer defeat in opener

Bermuda 0

Honduras 1

Bermuda girls’ under-15 side lost their opening match against Honduras in the inaugural Concacaf Championship in the Cayman Islands yesterday.

The Islanders dominated the opening exchanges with Jada Samuels and Leilana Nesbeth both going close with strikes on target.

It was Honduras, however, who took the lead somewhat against the run of play just before half-time as Bermuda seemed to visibly tire.

Bermuda pushed for an equaliser in the second half with Nesbeth having a shot blocked from close range.

At the other end, Micah Pond, the Bermuda goalkeeper, was forced into a fine save before Brianna Swainson had a shot agonisingly cleared off the line.

Swainson then tried her luck from 40 yards that fell just wide as Honduras hung on to claim the victory.

Bermuda return to action against Trinidad & Tobago tomorrow, while Honduras take on Barbados in group B.

n The Bermuda Under-17 side returned to the Island last night from Mexico City, where they had been involved in the Under-16 Mexico Cup of Nations. Andrew Bascome’s side impressed against their more decorated opponents, losing 2-0 to Colombia, Chile and Portugal.
