general accountants in Bermuda has been rewarded by an industry body in Canada.

The Certified General Accountants' Association Canada has awarded Mr. Bruce Wilkie with the designation, Fellow of Certified General Accountants (FCGA).

Mr. Wilkie's award was one of two made outside Canada this year and only the second FCGA awarded to a Bermudian.

"Auditing in Bermuda is controlled by the 1973 Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bermuda Act,'' said Mr. Wilkie.

"Auditing is restricted to members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bermuda (ICAB). There is no technical reason why qualified general accountants are not recognised. The courses for chartered and general accountants are of a similar quality.

"We are trying to get this reversed and lift restrictions against general accountants incorporating,'' he said.

Mr. Wilkie has been involved with the association since 1967. The Certified General Accountants' Association of Bermuda has established a local educational facility and asserted its right to regulate and discipline its members, but according to Mr. Wilkie, Government has objected that the association's aims are contrary to existing legislation.

Mr. Wilkie's local company, Cammco, provides accounting services, management consultancy, chartered secretarial services and acts as a real estate agent.
