earthquake tremor which rattled windows and caused the ground to shake.

Police reported receiving calls shortly after 9.40 p.m. from people who said they had felt the tremor. No damage was reported.

"It was very strong,'' said Donato Sgobba of Boss's Cove, Pembroke. "It lasted eight to ten seconds and everything was rattling. The dogs were up and barking.'' Mr. Eddie Saints of Tamarind Vale, Warwick said: "We felt a continuous rumble. It sounded like a subway train, if you were walking the streets of New York, and it lasted about 15 to 20 seconds.'' Seismologist Noel Barstow of the Lamont Geological Observatory in New York State said a tremor was recorded in the Atlantic Ocean last night measuring 3.5 on the Koda scale, which measures the "length magnitude'' of earthquakes.

Details of its strength on the Richter Scale are expected today.

Ms Barstow said the quake probably occurred several hundred miles away from the Island.
