Boulevard blunders prove costly
This match started as if PHC wanted to give it away, but ultimately it was the home team who were the more charitable at St. David's yesterday.
A dreadful goalkeeping error by Ellsworth Bean gifted Boulevard an early goal but the deficit was erased when Dean Boyles' clumsy challenge in the 11th minute resulted in a penalty.
The final Boulevard indiscretion came two minutes from time when goalkeeper Hewvonnie Brown could not hold an Ottis Steede shot and substitute Sheridan Ming pounced to score.
To add insult to injury, Boulevard will have to do without defender Donne Charles for the next three matches after he was sent off for a second bookable offence late in the game.
But this was a performance that will have done little to boost the confidence of either side.
Boulevard may be more concerned as theirs is a more seasoned team but they lacked the creativity for which they are noted while the younger Zebras, who are sitting atop the Coca-Cola First Division, may get better as time passes.
After the opening five minutes, it would have taken a brave person to predict a PHC victory, simply because the last line of defence was in a shambles.
Bean, charged with the task of keeping the number one jersey from Ty Williams, looked anything but when he allowed a Dwight Warren cross to bounce over his head at the near post 90 seconds into the match.
All Wade needed to do was get his body in the way and the Blazers were ahead.
Seconds later the shaken 'keeper muffed an attempted clearance but PHC were let off as Anthony Stovell got back to defend.
Instantly, Williams was off the bench warming up but Boulevard failed to capitalise on the youngster's nerves and instead tested him with a few long-range efforts that built his confidence.
At the other end, Boyles contrived to get PHC back into the match. First, in the third minute, he lost possession deep in his penalty area allowing Shawn Simons to get off a left-foot shot, which Brown parried.
Winston Trott should have buried the rebound from 10 yards but he shot well over.
Trott would make no mistake in the 11th minute, however, as he easily converted a spot-kick after Boyles clumsily bundled over Simons.
The match fizzled into a series of misdirected passes and midfield skirmishes until PHC created a chance out of nothing 12 minutes into the second half when Brown reacted well to deny Lightbourne after a good pass from Dano Outerbridge.
Boulevard were at their best in the next 20 minutes, looking dangerous whenever attacking PHC's right.
Left-back Vernon Eve, Dwight Warren and Albert Caisey were omnipresent in this regard but it was always the last touch that failed to bring feared striker Kenny Hill into play.
With confidence long restored, Bean advanced well to collect from Hill in the 75th minute on a rare occasion when Dill was beaten in the air.
Moments later, the lanky sweeper saved what would have been a sure goal with a sprawling clearance at the near post when Warren crossed for Symonds. But for the opening goal that should not have been, Boulevard created their only clear-cut chance in the 84th minute.
Unfortunately for them, it fell to fresh substitute Abdul Smith who side-footed wide from 12 yards after a patient build-up and searching cross from Eve.
Like the previous goals, the winner came out of nothing. After running out of options on the right, Lightbourne passed inside to Steede whose 25-yard effort, though well struck, should have been handled cleanly by Brown.
It was not, and Ming provided the finishing touch to send the visitors on a happy ride back west.
Charles' ejection came in the second minute of injury time for serious foul play and climaxed a match that also saw four Boulevard and two PHC players booked.
