PDL Charity Cup to kick start new season
The new football season will start on Monday ... but not with the traditional season-opening Charity Cup.Cal Blankendal, BFA first vice president and Leagues and Competitions Committee chairman, confirmed yesterday that instead the season will begin with the PDL Charity Cup match between league champions Dandy Town and Knockout Cup winners St George’s at Bernard Park at 3pm.A PDL league fixture between North Village Rams and PHC Zebras will follow at 3.00.It was originally planned to hold the Charity Cup between league champions Dandy Town and FA Cup champions North Village on Sunday and a Dudley Eve double-header on Monday. However, changes were made so that national team players can commit to the Bermuda team’s trip to Haiti next week for the Digicel Cup qualifiers.“Traditionally the Charity Cup for men opens the season but due to our national team participating in the CFU Digicel Cup in Haiti from September 5 to 12, the season will open with the PDL Charity Cup on Labour Day on Monday, September 3,” said Blankendal.“It’s been a challenging time putting the schedule together, there is a new coaching staff at the Bermuda Football Association and we have honoured their request to prepare the team in the best manner they can in a short time frame. Also there are the usual challenges we face with the multiple sports that are played on the same grounds and trying to communicate with clubs that are able to host opening rounds of matches. Once again the BFA are able to pull it off and we look forward to a busy and hectic schedule.”Blankendal said the scheduling also made allowances for the Corporate Games which will take place from October 25-28. The Charity Cup will now be played on September 15 at BAA Field, now called the Goose Gosling Field, while First Diviaion action will begin on September 16 and Premier Division teams opening their campaign on the weekend of September 21 with matches on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.Opening Dudley Eve matches are scheduled for September 18 at Goose Gosling Field where PHC play Somerset and Devonshire Cougars meet St George’s Colts.
