Decorative gate to replace toilets

A new decorative gate is planned to replace the public toilets in Par-La-Ville Park, Hamilton.

Mayor of Hamilton, Lawson Mapp, said: “The toilets will be taken down but there is no definitive date on that yet.

“A decorative metal gate will be placed where the toilets are.”

Plans for the gate were received by the Planning Department on February 23 and the Corporation of Hamilton is awaiting approval.

Woman, 85, rescued by fireman

An 85-year-old woman was rescued by firemen this week after she fell into an open manhole inside the Bermuda Bookstore. The manhole was uncovered while a workman was below, a Fire Service spokesperson said.

As a precaution, firemen placed her in a Kendricks extrication device to hold her spine in place as they lifted her from the hole. The woman did not complain of any serious injuries, though she suffered cuts to her right knee and shin which were bleeding “quite heavily”.

She was treated at Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Air France flight diverted to Bermuda

An Air France flight was diverted to Bermuda at 3 p.m. on Thursday when a 50-year-old male passenger suffered chest pains.

The Boeing 747-400 jumbo jet was en route from Paris, France to Miami, Florida. It landed in Bermuda.

The passenger, accompanied by his wife, was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for a check-up.

Airport general manager James Howes said the plane did not stay long.

“The aeroplane is due to leave as soon as they refuel.”
