The Department of Planning denied a local bank's application to replace its existing signs with larger ones.

The Bank of Bermuda applied to Planning to replace the four existing signs located on the sides of its main offices on Front Street as well as adding an obelisk there.

The Development Applications Board refused the March application, stating that the proposed replacement signs contained lettering that exceeded the maximum size of 15 inches as stipulated in the Advertising Regulations Act 1911.

Anna Lowery, the bank's public relations manager, said inquiries were only made to see if the proposed signs would be approved. No signs were made or designed, she explained.

"They were just thinking of enlarging one of the signs on the side of the building," Ms Lowery said. "Now we're trying to find out what size we're going to be able to use."
