A young man nearly lost his hand in a machete attack and a club bouncer was stabbed as Bermuda witnessed another weekend of violence.

Doctors at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital operated to save the 20-year-old St. George's man's hand after it was almost sliced off when he was attacked with a machete.

The victim was spotted by a member of the public as he staggered along Parson's Road, Pembroke, bleeding heavily at 2.45 a.m. on Saturday.

Police said yesterday that the victim also suffered a machete wound to the foot, but says he cannot remember anything about the attack because he had been drinking heavily.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said: "Doctors managed to reattach the tendons and bones to save the man's hand and he is expected to be in hospital for the next three to five days.

"The machete chop to the foot was not as bad and they have treated the wound.

"The complainant is saying he does not remember anything as he had had a bit to drink. Police are treating this as a very serious incident and would like to appeal to any witnesses to contact Acting Inspector Nick Pedro on 295 0011 or the Crimestoppers on 1800 6234 8477."

A bouncer from the Ozone nightclub on Front Street was also rushed to hospital in the early hours of Saturday after he was stabbed when he got into a fight with two men.

Police said the incident happened at 2.20 a.m. when the two men started fighting with a bouncer at Flanagan's Irish bar, which is also in the Emporium building.

The fight started after the men tried to get into the bar through the internal stairs but were refused entry.

The bouncer from Ozone ran to help and was stabbed on the left side of his body, receiving seven stitches to a three quarter inch wound.

He was taken to hospital and later discharged. Two men were arrested in connection with the attack.
