Forward Brett Wilson, capped eight times by the famous All Blacks, suffered "severe, extensive injuries'' after being hit by a water truck as he rode his rented moped at 8.12 last night.

Wilson, on the Island for the annual World Rugby Classic at the National Sports Club, was understood to have suffered a broken leg and broken several bones in his face.

But he was rushed to hospital just after 8 p.m. last night when he was knocked off his bike outside the Point Mart supermarket.

A hospital spokesman said he was being taken into surgery for treatment of a fractured tibia and fibula -- the shin bones.

But a hospital spokeswoman said Wilson was conscious when he was admitted.
