Hospitals Auxiliary to offer $100,000 scholarship to medical student
Medical students will have a one time opportunity to win a $100,000 scholarship from The Hospitals Auxiliary of Bermuda (HAB).
In celebration of 50 years of service to the Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) and the local community, HAB announced it will award a successful candidate with a $100,000 scholarship.
"We have never before provided a scholarship of this magnitude to a medical student," said the president of the Hospitals Auxiliary of Bermuda, Joy Williams.
"Since 1953, with currently more than 300 volunteers, the HAB has proudly supported both the Island's hospitals," she said.
Ms Williams added: "In our 50th year, it is our pleasure to offer a $100,000 scholarship to a medical student."
The scholarship will be awarded to a Bermudian or spouse of a Bermudian who has been accepted to, or is currently enrolled in a recognised medical school. Those interested in applying for the scholarship must submit all academic records, including transcripts and an essay entitled, 'What makes a good doctor'. The deadline is on June 30. Application forms are available from the BHB Human Resources Department, located in Montrose Cottage at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. The chief executive officer of BHB, Joan Dillas-Wright, said: "We are delighted that the Hospitals Auxiliary of Bermuda is able to donate these funds. Achieving a medical degree is extremely costly, especially for local students who must travel overseas to obtain their education. We are very proud of their initiative."
