Government records from being damaged in a flood last month, The Royal Gazette can reveal.

Heavy showers on February 22 caused problems in locations across the Island, including offices, restaurants, a supermarket and private residences.

One place that suffered was the Bermuda Industrial Union building, on Union Street, in Hamilton, at which Government leases the former Co-Op supermarket to keep 12,000 boxes of official documents in.

At the time, a Fire Department spokesman told The Royal Gazette that he could not provide information on whether any damage was caused.

But during last week's budget debate, Works and Engineering Minister Alex Scott revealed that staff at the Co-Op building "were very quick off the mark'' to move the records before any damage could be done.

Yesterday, BIU building manager Colin Simmons confirmed that no damage had been caused to the precious paperwork.

He explained the flood was caused by an overflowing tank. and added that, luckily, the incident happened during working hours so staff were on hand to take the necessary action.
