Warwick maintains portrait tradition
Warwick Academy headmaster Bob Lennox jets off for a new life in Turkey on Monday — but he will leave a lasting impression on the school.
Mr. Lennox, from Derby, England, has been headteacher at Warwick since 1997. He is set to take up a new post as principal of a Muslim school in Istanbul later this month.
His replacement is Maggie McCorkell — the school's first female headteacher. .Artist Abby McCahery has painted an image of the departing principal to hang in the assembly hall alongside portraits of some of his predecessors.
Staff at the school think the Scottish painter has created a remarkable likeness — and Mr. Lennox is also pleased with the results.
School board secretary Joan Shadbolt said the 350-year-old school began commissioning artists to paint portraits of headteachers in the 1950s. All of the paintings, including a large portrait of long-serving headteacher Geoffrey Lamacraft, will be hung on a wall in the hall once its new roof is in place.
Ms Shadbolt described the portrait of Mr. Lennox as "perfect". "It's exactly the expression and the eyes," she said. "It's a more modern and up-to-date painting than the others. The others are much softer. This one is very detailed."
Ms McCahery, 31, was recommended to the school by Bermuda Society of Arts. She told The Royal Gazette: "It took me about two months to paint and the medium was oil on canvas.
"It is the biggest commission I have done to date and I was quite nervous considering the history of headmaster portraits but Bob was such a lovely person and I was anxious to portray that in my painting."
