But road safety officer Roxanne Christopher told The Royal Gazette that falling asleep at the wheel was not a pressing safety problem on Bermuda's roads and the accidents were "isolated incidents''.

She added: "The number of accidents on Bermuda's roads has definitely gone down over the last three years, everything from fender benders to fatalities.'' Police attended the scene of a single vehicle accident just after 2. a.m. on Friday at the junction of Harrington Hundreds on Knapton Hill Road in Smith's.

The accident involved a car driven by a 22-year-old woman who had a six-year-old child as a passenger.

The woman apparently fell asleep at the wheel and collided with a nearside wall causing extensive damage to the car.

The driver was not seriously injured but the child received stitches for a cut lip.

Further investigation revealed the driver had no valid licence or insurance for the car.

In a similar accident, an 18-year-old Smith's man, who said he fell asleep at the wheel of his car, required treatment at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for lacerations to his head.

The incident occurred just after 2 a.m. on Sunday on Knapton Hill.
