Bank of Bermuda Foundation makes donations to charities

The Bank of Bermuda Foundation yesterday announced that seven local charities and schools received significant donations from foundation in the second quarter of 2007, totalling close to three quarters of a million dollars.

The follow schools and charities received the cash boosts:

Adult Education School

The Adult Education School provides an alternative education programme for adult learners who have not been successful in mainstream education. Through sponsorship and fundraising, the Adult Education School aims to continue to provide a literacy programme for both current and prospective students while updating their facilities and resources.

Bermuda Sailing Association

The Bermuda Sailing Association is the governing body for the sport of sailing in Bermuda. Throughout the years, the Bermuda Sailing Association has provided sailing tuition and facilities, sailing camps, activities and encouraged participation in competitive sailing both locally and internationally. Donated funds will assist the Bermuda Sailing Association with their aim to provide a novice student sailing programme along with various student activities to promote the sport of sailing among the youth.

Bermuda School of Music

The Bermuda School of Music provides musical tuition and services to students throughout Bermuda. Plans are now underway to develop a new facility that offers the best environment and resources in which the Bermuda School of Music can continue to provide musical tuition.

Bermuda Sloop Foundation

The Bermuda Sloop Foundation is a youth-focused organisation geared toward Bermudians between the ages of 13-25. The Bermuda Sloop Foundation provides youth with opportunities to strengthen character and self esteem, and broaden mechanical and technical skills through ocean sailing. The Bermuda Sloop Foundation is currently planning to launch new projects in which the Island's youth will have the opportunity to partake in voyages around the Island and to various international ports.

Pride Bermuda

Pride Bermuda is an organisation that provides support to parents, schools and the youth for a healthy lifestyle, in specific relation to drug and alcohol prevention. Using school initiatives, Pride Bermuda reaches out to the community to educate and stimulate anti drug attitudes. Through the assistance of charitable funding, Pride continues to work alongside teachers and parents, implementing drug and alcohol prevention programmes and activities in Bermuda.

Sequoia Learning Foundation

The Sequoia Learning Foundation is an organisation dedicated to promoting healthy childhood development with a specific focus on language and learning. In response to national language and learning statistics, the Sequoia Learning Foundation aims to provide a comprehensive intervention programme, designed to address individuals who are challenged with learning and language difficulties.

The Reading Clinic

The ICAN Mathematics Project is a pilot programme, affiliated with The Reading Clinic, designed to address mathematics performance in Bermuda. As a result of sponsorship, three local primary schools will take part in the ICAN Mathematics project researching weaknesses in numeracy of Primary 5 students. The Reading Clinic hopes to use the findings of this project to develop learning tactics and teaching practices with a view to improving numeracy in students.
