Miller smashes age group record
Series on Saturday when she set a new age group record, 2:47.84, during the 200 metres backstroke event at the BASA pool.
Miller shaved four-and-a-half seconds off the previous record set by Tiffany Gosling in 1988.
The 12-year-old from Harbour Club followed that up by achieving a personal best in the 100 metres freestyle in a Double A time of 1:07.73.
Affected by illness in earlier meets, Miller looked like she is finally back on track.
Tamika Williams of Sharks also swam well in freestyle events, posting Double A marks in both the 50 (29.20) and 100 (1:04.81). Team-mate Zoe Roberts, 13, recorded another Double A time in the 50 free in her age group when she clocked 30:13.
Candace Marson of Sharks joined the list of swimmers who have qualified for selection for the Caribbean Championships in Jamaica next month. Marson swam a Double A time in the 100 metres backstroke in the 10 and under age group with a time of 1:28.21.
In the boys events, Stephen Fahy registered Double A times in two events, the 100 metres freestyle (56.20) and 100 metres butterfly (1:01.88) and managed a Triple A time in the 50 metres freestyle (25.47). Trevor Ferguson posted Double A times in all three freestyle events that he entered, the 50 (26.20), 100 (57.46) and 200 (2:05.34).
The 100 metres freestyle was the most popular event of the day with seven heats in the boys event with four swimmers, Craig Ferguson (59.52), Matthew Hammond (1:00.33), Nicholas Van de Weg (1:01.06) and Paul Fox (1:06.83), all achieving Double A times.
The next event on the swimming calendar is the National Championships, which take place from June 17 to 19. Nine swimmers from Canada, the United States and Puerto Rico have accepted invitations from the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association to participate.
These overseas swimmers will provide added competition for Bermuda's national squad members, particularly those hoping to make the qualifying standards for the Commonwealth Games to be held in August in Canada.
Bermuda swimmers returning for the championships will be Jenny Smatt and Geri Mewett, both currently in the United States. Smatt, Mewett, Stanley Harris and Chris Flook have qualified for the Commonwealth Games.
The National Championships also provide the last opportunity for swimmers to make qualifying times for the Age Group Championships in Jamaica.
