A Pembroke man will be tried in Supreme Court for allegedly stealing a wallet and jewellery from another man and using personal violence against him.

Roger Lightbourne, 36, was charged indictably last week in Magistrates' Court with stealing the wallet of Donovan Fitzroy Walters, containing Jamaican and American money, a Jamaican drivers licence, and a Jamaican identification card.

Lightbourne, who was not represented, was also accused of stealing two rings and a chain from Mr. Walters.

He allegedly committed the offence on August 25 with the help of another man, who did not appear in court.

Crown counsel Shakira Dill objected to bail but Magistrate Archie Warner granted it in the sum of $5,000 with a surety.

Lightbourne told the court: "I know I am going to clear this charge ? I do not even know why I got charged."

He asked the court: "How can someone be put behind bars before being convicted?"

"Going to Westgate will be a set back for me," he said.

Mr. Warner ordered Lightbourne to report to the Hamilton Police station on Mondays and Fridays and warned him if he failed to do so his bail could be revoked.

Lightbourne is to appear in court again for mention on September 16.

A Devonshire man racked up $1,500 in fines for traffic and drug offences in Magistrates' Court last week.

Winston Thomas Hall, 36, admitted to possession of 4.11 grams of cannabis, driving without due care and attention, and failing to stop for Police.

Crown counsel Shakira Dill said that Hall was speeding on a motorcycle in Hamilton parish and increased his speed when he saw Police. Finally, Police caught up with him and when Hall was getting off his cycle he dropped it on the Police car, tearing off the bumper.

Magistrate Archie Warner fined Hall $1,000 for the cannabis, $300 for driving without due care and attention, and $200 for failing to stop for Police.

The incident happened on May 1, 2004.

A 19-year-old's suspended sentence for unlawful assault was activated last week in Magistrates' Court when the teen admitted another offence.

Kevin Megal Arorash, of Rock Oven Lane, St. George's, admitted possession of 1.85 grams of cocaine but said he did not know he was holding the drug ? he thought it was money.

Arorash told the court that he saw someone drop a black canister so he picked it up because he thought there was money in it and before he checked to see what the contents were the Police pulled him over and found the canister containing cocaine.

Crown counsel Shakira Dill told the court that Arorash was driving while disqualified when Police pulled him over and found 11 white rocks of cocaine on him ? ten in the canister and one in his pocket.

Arorash said: "I know it is a very serious crime and I apologise."

"I didn't know what was in the case ? I've never been caught with cocaine and I don't sell drugs, " he said.

The court heard that Arorash was given a six-month sentence, suspended for two years, for assault in October 2003.

Magistrate Archie Warner activated Arorash's suspended sentence and sentenced him to another six months for drug possession to be served concurrent with the activated sentence.
