Fire crews raced to the Sonesta Beach Hotel after an electrical transformer in the main boiler room caught fire and triggered an alert.

Hundreds of guests were asked to leave the hotel while fireman tackled the blaze, which was confined to the area of the electrical equipment.

They were allowed back in around an hour-and-a-half after the fire crews were called in.

A Fire Service spokesman said yesterday the cause of the problem, which flared up just before 11 a.m., was being probed by fire investigators.
