The 32-year-old Pembroke victim was able to make his way to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
He was treated for face injuries, and cuts to his arms and body.
The incident occurred in Vesey Street shortly before 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
Police say the victim states he was walking near the junction with Loyal Hill when he was bashed over the head with a heavy object.
Up to five men then started punching and kicking him, and removed his wallet, containing the cash and chain and pendant.
