Shadow Youth and Sport Minister John Brunson last night called on Government to put preventative measures in place to prevent outbursts of violence at sports games ? rather than reacting to them.

Mr. Brunson made the call after seeing news reports of violence at the Friendship Trophy Final at Wellington Oval.

Mr. Brunson said sports clubs needed to be more pro-active about preventing and resolving incidents of violence. He suggested camera security be imposed at the entrance to sports clubs to improve security and deter thugs from harming other people at sports events.

?We have to put into effect some of the things we have committed to do. Government needs to work with the sports clubs to improve security. This event demonstrates that in order to curb violence we need to be preventative instead of reactive,? said Mr. Brunson.

?A young man has been critically injured, it is most important to appeal to the public to come together and to resolve this as a community. I do support the Government?s statement about this kind of behaviour,? he said. ?It happened today and they had a press conference today ? it sparked them to do something and we need to carry that kind of action forward in providing solutions to violence.?

Yesterday?s violence was the fourth outburst this season.

During the reconvening of Parliament last October, Government announced it would push to amend the Criminal Code, establishing sporting clubs as increased penalty zones.
