Bermuda step up search for new head coach
A new national football coach could be installed prior to Bermuda’s international friendly against regional opposition next month.Bermuda Football Association (BFA) director of player development Devarr Boyles fulfilled his role as interim national coach following the Island’s exit from 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers last November. And it is hoped that a successor for the ex-Dandy Town midfielder can be found before February 29, which FIFA has set aside as a fixed date for international matches.“We can’t put a time frame on it right now but we will certainly like to have a national coach in place for the February match if we are successful in getting that,” said BFA player development committee chairman Mark Wade. “We would definitely like to have the national coach and staffing in place for that.“We have some candidates that we have reached out to and we are working through the process of building a job description and package that we can certainly offer. And we will go through the process of vetting those candidates that we have reached out to already.”Since Boyles completed his brief tenure as interim national coach the BFA have approached a number of potential candidates to fill the void on a more permanent basis.Among those that have shown a serious interest in assuming the key role is former English pro Kyle Lightbourne, who has served as national coach in the past.During his previous two-year term as national coach Lightbourne guided Bermuda into the top 120 countries in FIFA’s World Rankings.Bradford City and Bermuda striker Nahki Wells believes someone of Lightbourne’s experience as a pro could be an asset at the national level.“Obviously he can bring a lot of professionalism from his playing career,” he said. “I’m sure Kyle will bring a different philosophy that could make a difference.“It’s important we bring in experienced professionals or experienced coaches, and he is an experienced professional which I believe can be helpful.”Meanwhile, Wade said as many as seven regional countries had been invited to play Bermuda in an international friendly next month.Antigua and Barbuda have confirmed they are among the teams to have been approached.“We have sent out some invites and now we are just working through availability and all the other logistics associates with that,” he added. “Obviously everybody acknowledged receiving the invites and they are all regional opposition.“We are in discussions with them all and we should be able to make an announcement in the near future.”
