Trojans, PHC in new final rivalry
classic battle between Island's most notorious cup teams in Somerset and PHC.
The pair last met on the `carpet' in 1982 -- ironically in this same competition -- and it proved quite a spectacle with the Zebras, spurred by a Kenny Burt hat-trick, winning 4-1.
"I remember that game,'' said Somerset skipper Brian Simons, a member of the losing side that year. "But back then we had different players. The way I look at it now, we have the trophy and plan on keeping it.
"Come five o'clock on Wednesday I expect to take that trophy home. If we work as a team for one another it should be no problem.'' Three players remain from the Zebras side who took the field a decade ago.
Brothers Mike and Kevin Dill along with Frank Ming each played roles in that historic win while Simons and Kelly Simmons are holdovers for Somerset, the defending champions.
PHC coach Jack Castle also played a vital role in the match at right-back setting up one of the goals for Burt.
However, the coaching neophyte's current objective is to guide his players from the sidelines to what he hopes will be but one of many successes and a continuance in the cup-winning tradition at the Warwick club.
"I'm looking to establish myself as a coach and I'll take anything that comes,'' said Castle. "To win we'll certainly have to be strong defensively and in midfield. But we'll obviously have to find a way to score some goals.'' While veterans Mike Dill and Derek Douglas will no doubt take care of the defensive burden and Frank Ming, Sheridan Ming can handle the midfield, Castle will rely on youth up front.
Forward Kenny Mills has flourished in the absence of Kyle Lightbourne and Sammy Swan, but the remainder at Castle's disposal are unproven commodities.
Said Castle: "It's a completely new attack with several youngsters and there's not any one player I'm leaning toward for scoring.'' On the other hand Somerset have potential game breakers in Rodney Bascome and Jerry Webb, the latter returning from a three-match suspension.
Bascome scored the winner in last year's 1-0 triumph over North Village but has not come close to matching that form thus far this season.
"He (Bascome) is one of the guys I'm looking to lead them,'' said Larry Hunt, coach of Somerset. "He's going through a spell and not showing consistency.
Opponents are making it harder for him this year and he'll definitely have to step his game up a bit.'' Somerset are undefeated thus far this season while PHC have been quite erratic to date, but when these two meet in a cup final all statistics can be thrown out the window.
